5. Parking provision and management

Higher density schemes tend to have lower car parking provision. This section is concerned with planning, providing and managing zero or restricted parking schemes. It is important to offer alternatives to car usage if possible, and to ensure that any limited car parking is effectively controlled and managed.

Cross reference with section 8: Service Charges
Has an assessment of the household composition on the scheme and likely car ownership been made?
What provision has been made for parking on the scheme for:        
  • Residents
  • Delivery
  • Carers
  • Maintenance vehicles
  • Visitors
How has car parking been allocated across the tenures? Does the affordable housing have appropriate access to some of the provision?
How have the needs of disabled persons been catered for?
Where parking provision is less then 50% (i.e. one car parking space per 2 dwellings) what provision has been made for alternatives to car ownership and usage? For example:
  • Is there a residential travel plan in place or proposed?
  • Is a car club proposed?
Is there a plan to manage and control illegal parking?
Does the design help to prevent illegal parking through raised kerbs and planting schemes for example?
What provision has been made for motor bike parking
What provision is made for cycle storage?
Where underground or undercroft parking is proposed what measures have been incorporated to ensure security and pleasant access to these areas?
