Jason / Floating support user

When Jason first started receiving support from East Living he was sceptical about how much it would help.
Over two years later, Jason says his confidence has improved and he’s now able to live a more independent life, thanks to the help he gets. “I didn’t think it would help but it has, when you’re like that you don’t think anything will help.
“Now I go to different groups and I’ve made a load of new friends. My life is different because I can do what I like now.”
Jason also feels the support has given him a better understanding of mental health problems and how they affect people differently. “people have all different mental health problems buts there are some you can relate to because you have the same issues. I’m curious to know what other people are going through and I’d like to think I can help them.”
Jason was battling with depression before his support started and dropped out of college, feeling he had too much to deal with. However with his improved confidence, Jason has decided to re-enrol in college and from September he’ll continue his floristry studies.
He is also pursuing musical ambitions with friends from the Day Opportunities mental health centre. “Late last year a few us wanted to start up our own band. We play now at Day Opportunities events now.”
Jason is visited by his support worker, Verona, every three weeks. “Verona gives me things she thinks I might like to do. If I get letters and I don’t understand them, someone tells me what they mean.”
Jason’s advice to anyone in a similar position to him would be to stay positive and talk to a support officer. “Things will get better.”
