The plans are being considered

We’ve just reached a really important milestone in the regeneration of the estate with the plans submitted to Tower Hamlets Council just a few weeks ago. The plans set out the designs for the new homes and we expect to hear in June/July from the planning team at Tower Hamlets about whether we have the approval to move ahead.

The planning submission is available on the Tower Hamlets website: http://planreg.towerhamlets.gov.uk/WAM/findCaseFile.do?appNumber=PA/12/00360&action4=search

There are also some printed copies available in the estate office.

Preparing the plans for the new homes has been a big job involving lots of people, including many residents. Thanks to the NUW Futures Group for giving up their time over the past year to provide feedback on every element of the designs – from the size and height of the buildings through to the layouts of homes and the landscaping around the buildings.

Over the past year the designs for the new homes have moved on and changed a lot, and that in large part has been due to the feedback from residents. Throughout 2011 we held three events to share the plans with residents and get feedback. We had more than 70 residents at the last event in November 2011 which was used by our architects to finish the plans.

We’ll be continuing to hold events on the estate during 2012 so residents can meet the team and hear about what’s happening. The Futures Group will be continuing to meet and will remain involved in the regeneration plans. This year will be an exciting year for the estate, so if you’d like to get more involved, come along to a meeting or get in touch with the team.

About the regeneration

View from the Thames

There are currently 189 households on New Union Wharf. As part of the regeneration these will be replaced with 400 homes of mixed tenure and East Thames will be investing in the estate to improve the quality of living and to help to preserve and expand the fantastic community that already exists on the estate.

There are four main reasons for carrying out regeneration:

1. To improve the quality of homes
Regeneration would provide tenants with modern, new homes built to a high standard with modern energy saving features. They would be designed to last at least 60 years.

2. The estate is poorly designed
Designed in the 70s, the estate suffers from issues related to security, damp, drainage and leaking roofs. The communal areas are also poorly designed and under-utilised.

3. To reduce maintenance costs and repair problems
As the estate ages, it is costing more to maintain. Some of the issues, such as the damp, will worsen as the estate ages. This is costly for East Thames and frustrating for residents.

4. To provide affordable homes on the Isle of Dogs
We want to provide more affordable homes in east London, including the Isle of Dogs. In the past few years we have helped hundreds of households on low to moderate incomes onto the housing ladder through affordable home ownership and we want to continue to do this.

    Getting involved

View from the courtyard looking towards the Thames

Throughout the regeneration East Thames will be keeping residents up to date in various ways. Each month all residents will receive a newsletter updating them on the progress of the regeneration. Information will be available on the web and there will be occasional events on the estate to keep residents up to date.

Residents can also get involved by joining our resident forum, The Futures Group. The Futures Group is an open forum and all residents on the estate are welcome to attend. The group hears updates about the regeneration and provides feedback on these proposals.

The Futures Group meets the last Wednesday of every month at 7pm at the estate office on Nightingale Court.

If you would like to get involved in the Futures Group you can come along or get in touch with Steve (contact details below).
